History of the name Avaruussuo
It’s the Introduce Yourself Week in Blaugust. There is a short introduction on the About page. I plan to update that sometime, but for the introduction post, I will write about the name of my blog. I told about the history of the title “Avaruussuo” before in a comment on Tsuhelm, but never here on the blog, so I will do it now. Oddly enough, I currently do not use an Avaruussuo domain. In some themes I used the past, the name was not visible but is now shown in the header.
When at the university, I lived in the Varissuo suburb of Turku. Varissuo is Finnish and would directly translate to Crow Swamp in English. I had quite a many parties there. Once, one of my friends said we go to Avaruussuo, a pun on the district name. That would translate to Space Swamp. The name stuck, and we called my place Avaruussuo. We also used the name for our IRC channel.
I also used the title for my website before starting a blog at WordPress.com. I am bad at coming up with names and just put Avaruussuo there when creating the blog. I planned to figure out a more descriptive title but never did. Now I feel reluctant to change the name because it stayed there for so long.
